SAP vs. OBIEE Review Roundup: Enterprise Wrestling Match

Wrestling for a position in an enterprise-level match up, both SAP and Oracle, SAP BO vs OBIEE, provide business intelligence (BI) solutions that are typically central to mission-critical reporting and strategic planning for most organizations. Each wSAP BI vs Oracle BIill be awarded points during the match for a “take down” or “reversal.” In some cases, a clear “pin” secures the match.

Also, ability to combine data, I created a report based on SAP data from BW and combined it with data from SQL server to be able to report on the data in a way that would not have been possible to do except with manual steps. The solution I built replaced a manual process that would take 3 weeks and provided an automated solution. We were able to get the critical analysis in a small fraction of time and able to run the business better as a result. Can be a little buggy. OBIEE – “Exalytics combined with Exadata server makes it possible to query ~ 50TB of datamart data (uncompressed size), that’s really great and ~ 1000 of simultaneous requests.In the past it was not possible to join data from so many different sources due to the performance limitations imposed by the size of the data Self service BI. Microsoft BI – “Microsoft SSRS biggest advantage is its ability to integrate with other third party components. You could integrate it with Share Point web part or you can access it from a Web browser, depending on your existing scenario you don’t need to change much to be able to integrate SSRS with your existing application…Microsoft SSRS is unable to provide a mechanism where poor performance reports could be prevented to run on production environment. For us it was complex to setup for the first time and too much R&D had to be done. Later on it was easier. The meta-modeling tools allows for a complex security system which can automatically filter data, in any report or ad-hoc tool, based on a user’s roles or groups. Dashboards are slow compared to other tools currently on the market. Visualizations are improving, but still difficult to get just right. Doesn’t require me to think about the level of aggregation that I’m going to need as it deals with large data sets. Harvard Business Review—Big Data Driving Evidence-Based Narratives

MoBig Datast of us would agree that the hype around this term has subsided but it’s still cool to say, “Big Data!”

Having the right Business Intelligence Tools to harvest the velocity, volume, and variety of data makes a huge impact on how you make evidence-based decisions. In a post in the Harvard Business Review, The Value of Big Data Isn’t the Data, Kristian J. Hammond describes coupling the power of data with a contextual narrative to provide more concrete actionable results.

Here’s an example from the post from:

“For the most part, we know what we want out of the data.  We know what analysis needs to be run, what correlations need to be found and what comparisons need to be made.  By taking what we know and putting it into the hands of an automated system that can do all of this and then explain it to us in human terms, or natural language, we can achieve the effectiveness and scale of insight from our data that was always its promise but, until now, has not been delivered.  By embracing the power of the machine, we can automatically generate stories from the data that bridge the gap between numbers and knowing.”

Let’s be fair though, not everyone needs the same “narrative” from their big data harvest. Actionable results can come from all kinds of triggers such as underutilized resources that need to be consolidated. Right-sizing the provisioning of network bandwidth at the enterprise level has a huge impact on customers and end-user experience. Business processes that support internal productivity can be adequately tweaked with or without a narrative.

Addy describes when Gartner subscription holders would get a substantial membership discount if he could convince them to save big money—adopting some of Gartner’s recommendations. Now who wouldn’t want to save big money based on Gartner’s proven track record of IT vendor analysis across a worldwide market? The end-user clients he contacted surprised him—and not what anyone would predict—until you read them.

Cost Savings

The top reasons given for non-adoption varied considerably:
“I haven’t been asked to save money there”
“I’ll keep that in my back pocket in case I need to make more cuts later”
“I’d have to get agreement from too many people within my organization”
“It will mean changing our internal processes (and that is too hard)”
“The return isn’t worth the pain”
“I have too many other things on my plate and don’t have the time to do it”
“I’m not prepared to bear the additional risk, however small”

We liked David Linthicum’s take on this in his InfoWorld > Cloud Computing post:
3 CIO no-no’s when moving to the cloud.

Basically, he says, “If you want your cloud efforts to fail or struggle, ignore these three warnings:”

  1. Never work without a plan. This means somebody in the organization should be charged with driving a core migration strategy that includes business case validation and pilot projects.
  2. Never work with cloud haters. In many instances, people in IT organizations will declare their opposition to cloud computing, even before they understand the application of this technology. Those people are usually poison when it comes to making in progress with cloud, so they should not be put on the project.
  3. Never work with a self-funded model. Many CIOs are moving to the cloud with the idea that cloud computing savings will pay for the migration costs.
Not Going Haywire

A lot can go haywire with cloud computing if you’re not careful about adopting the right fit for your environment. For example, you could identify a clear technological advantage of a particular vendor or strategy and end up having no one on your team to champion the solution. They don’t want to change and don’t understand the benefits—adopting a whole new strategy makes them uncomfortable.

So what’s next? Getting involved in crowdsourced social media about the different vendor solutions available to you.
